Changes to the Battery Discount Arriving 1 May 2026: Lock In Your System Now
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has successfully reduced the upfront cost of energy storage, making it easier than ever to add a battery to your solar system. However, as the market evolves, the government is updating the program settings to ensure it remains sustainable.
Significant changes are coming on 1 May 2026. If you have been considering a battery, now is the time to move forward and lock in your system.
What is Changing?
Subject to regulations, two major adjustments will reshape the program structure starting in May.
1. Adjustments to the Discount Value
To align with falling global battery prices, the government is adjusting the "STC Factor"—the metric used to calculate the value of the subsidy. From 1 May 2026, this factor will be adjusted downward and will decline more frequently (every 6 months) moving forward.
2. New "Tiered" Support for Larger Systems
The program is shifting to prioritize standard residential battery sizes. While the scheme continues to support batteries up to 100 kWh, the discount calculation will now "taper" based on capacity.
From 1 May, the discount will be applied in tiers:
-
0 – 14 kWh: 100% of the standard rate applies (Full support).
-
14 – 28 kWh: 60% of the standard rate applies to this portion.
-
28 – 50 kWh: 15% of the standard rate applies to this portion.
This means that while standard household batteries (typically 10–13.5 kWh) retain the full applicable rate tier, larger commercial or high-capacity systems will see a reduction in government support for any capacity over 14 kWh.
