Understanding Battery State of Charge
Battery state of charge shows how much usable energy remains in your battery system.
It is displayed as a percentage and will move up and down throughout the day depending on solar production, property power use and whether the batteries are being charged from solar, the grid or a generator.
Battery Levels to Watch60–100% — Normal
The battery has a good level of stored energy and normal household use can continue.
During strong solar conditions, the batteries may remain within this range for much of the day.
40–60% — Monitor
The battery level is reducing but is not normally a concern.
Check:
- Current solar production
- Time of day
- Weather conditions
- Current property load
If it is late in the day or poor weather is expected, avoid unnecessary power use.
20–40% — Take Notice
Start managing power use, particularly if there is limited solar available.
Consider:
- Delaying washing machines and dishwashers
- Turning off pool pumps
- Avoiding EV charging
- Reducing heating or air-conditioning use
- Avoiding several large appliances at the same time
If the system has a backup generator, confirm it has fuel and is ready to operate.
10–20% — Low Battery
This is generally the lower operating range, depending on the battery type and system settings.
At this point:
- The generator or grid may begin charging automatically.
- Non-essential loads should be turned off.
- Large appliances should be avoided.
- Power use should be limited until charging begins.
Some systems may start the generator before reaching 20%.
Below 10% — Critical
The system may shut down to protect the batteries if no charging source is available.
Turn off non-essential loads and check whether:
- The generator is running
- The grid is available
- Solar production has started
- Any system alarms are active
Battery levels are affected by:
- Solar production
- Weather and season
- Property power use
- Battery size
- Battery condition
- Generator or grid charging
- Large appliances operating together
High-demand equipment such as air conditioners, ovens, pumps, electric hot water and EV chargers can reduce battery levels quickly.
Reducing Battery DischargeWhen battery levels are low:
- Use only essential appliances.
- Run large loads during daylight hours.
- Avoid using several high-demand appliances together.
- Turn off unused lighting and equipment.
- Delay EV charging, pool pumps and water heating.
- Reduce heating and cooling where practical.
Use your monitoring platform to watch both battery percentage and current power use. Higher loads will cause the battery to discharge faster.

- The battery level drops much faster than normal.
- The batteries are not charging during good solar conditions.
- The generator does not start.
- The system shuts down while the battery level is still high.
- The battery percentage remains unchanged for a long period.
- A battery alarm continues to appear.
The displayed percentage is an estimate and may occasionally adjust as the battery system recalculates available capacity.
