How a Grid-Connected Power System Operates
Understand everyday solar, battery and grid power flows, and why your system may still use electricity from the grid.
Your system normally manages power automatically. The exact behaviour depends on whether you have a battery, the selected operating mode and the approved settings for your site.
During the day
Solar can supply appliances as it is generated. Available surplus may charge a battery or be exported where permitted. When the property and battery cannot use the available solar, an export restriction can cause generation to reduce. Low export does not necessarily mean low solar production.
At night or in cloudy weather
A solar-only property uses grid power when solar cannot meet demand. If batteries are installed, their contribution depends on the available charge, reserve, schedule and power limits. Grid imports can be normal even when the battery is not empty.
Power and energy are different
kW describes how much power is flowing at a moment. kWh describes energy used or generated over time. A 2 kW appliance running steadily for one hour uses 2 kWh. Compare like-for-like figures when looking at your app.
A simple power-flow example
Ignoring small losses, if solar is producing 4 kW and the property is using 2 kW, about 2 kW remains for battery charging or permitted export. If the property instead needs 6 kW, the remaining 2 kW must come from the battery, grid or both. This example explains the balance; it is not a prediction of your system's output.
Use your system with confidence
Use the live flow screen alongside the battery level and operating mode. When practical, run flexible loads while solar is available, but avoid starting several large appliances together on a limited backup supply. Do not copy someone else's reserve, charging schedule or installer settings: their equipment and requirements may differ.
