Why Your System Imports Grid Power or Limits Solar Exports
Understand normal grid imports, export limits and the role of internet connectivity on grid-connected systems.
A grid-connected solar and battery system may still buy electricity or reduce solar exports. A full battery or sunny weather does not, by itself, mean there is a fault.
Common reasons for grid imports
- The property is using more power than solar and the battery can supply at that moment.
- The battery has reached its configured reserve or is being held for backup.
- An approved charging schedule is using grid power.
- Battery temperature, charge state or an equipment limit is restricting discharge.
- Some loads are outside the part of the installation shown by a particular app reading.
Check the live power-flow screen, battery level, active schedule and alarms together. A graph showing energy over a day is different from a live power reading.
Why exports can be limited
Your network connection may have a fixed, zero or flexible export limit. These limits control how much power can leave the property. When loads and batteries cannot use the available solar and export is restricted, solar output may reduce.
For eligible South Australian connections, SA Power Networks Flexible Exports adjusts the permitted export according to network conditions. Reliable internet communication is part of this arrangement; a communication failure can reduce permitted export until it is restored. Check your own connection agreement rather than assuming a particular export allowance.
What to check before contacting MyEnergy
- Record the date and time, weather and battery percentage.
- Take a screenshot of solar, load, grid and battery power, plus any alarms.
- Check whether a charging schedule, retailer program or export limit applies.
- If flexible exports are configured, check the internet connection and any communication warning.
Do not change grid protection, metering or export settings. Contact MyEnergy if behaviour has changed unexpectedly, readings seem inconsistent or warnings persist. Ask your retailer about billing or tariff questions; monitoring estimates may differ from the retailer's meter data.
