Reading Your Grid-Connected Solar Monitoring
Make sense of generation, consumption, imports, exports and battery readings without confusing them with your electricity bill.
Your monitoring app helps you understand system behaviour. Start by checking the selected site, date range and last-updated time so you know whether you are looking at current data.
Know what each reading means
- Solar generation: electricity produced by the solar system.
- Consumption or load: electricity used by the property or the circuits covered by the monitoring arrangement.
- Grid import: electricity brought in from the network.
- Grid export: electricity sent out to the network.
- Battery: stored charge and charging or discharging activity, where a battery is installed.
Not every installation measures every value. A solar inverter may show generation without measuring whole-property consumption. Ask MyEnergy which readings your installed sensors support.
Compare the same period and units
A live power reading in kW is different from a daily energy total in kWh. Compare complete days or matching date ranges. Note any missing intervals, changed time settings or recent internet outages before drawing conclusions from a graph.
Why the app and bill may look different
Your retailer bill records metered energy exchanged with the grid. Solar used directly at the property does not appear as exported electricity. Generation therefore should not be expected to equal the export total. App savings estimates also depend on the tariff information entered.
For a useful comparison, collect the same import/export date range from the app and retailer, note whether a bill is estimated, and keep the relevant screenshots. Ask your retailer to explain billing and meter data; ask MyEnergy to check system readings or sensor configuration.
When data stops updating
An offline app does not by itself prove that solar has stopped working. Check household internet access and, if safely accessible, the inverter's normal display. Record the last successful update and any communication message. Do not disconnect electrical equipment or reset installer settings to restore the app.
When to ask for a review
Send us examples of repeated missing data, unexpected negative readings, sudden changes after electrical work or a clear mismatch between observed operation and the app. Include the time, active appliances and any recent router, inverter or meter changes.
