Using Air Conditioning Off-Grid

Air conditioning can be one of the largest electrical loads in an off-grid home. It can be used reliably, but timing and power management are important.

Best Time to Run Air Conditioning

Where possible, run air conditioning during daylight hours when solar production is strongest.

This allows solar to supply more of the load and reduces the amount of energy taken from the batteries.

Battery Levels to Watch

Above 60% — Normal Use

Air conditioning can generally be used normally, provided other large appliances are not operating at the same time.

40–60% — Monitor

Check solar production, time of day and current power use. Reduce unnecessary loads if the battery is continuing to fall.

20–40% — Limit Use

Use air conditioning only where needed and avoid operating ovens, pumps, EV chargers or electric hot water at the same time.

Below 20% — Reduce or Turn Off

Limit air conditioning until solar, grid or generator charging is available. Continued use may cause the generator to start or the system to shut down to protect the batteries.

Reducing Power Use

To reduce demand:

  • Set the temperature between 23°C and 25°C in summer.
  • Close doors and windows.
  • Cool only occupied rooms.
  • Use fans where practical.
  • Clean air-conditioning filters regularly.
  • Avoid heating or cooling unused areas.
  • Pre-cool the property during strong solar production.

Starting several air conditioners together can create a high surge load. Where possible, start units one at a time.
