System Shuts Down When a Large Appliance Starts

Large appliances can draw a high amount of power when starting. This is known as a starting surge and may be several times higher than the appliance’s normal running load.

Common appliances that can cause this include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Bore and pool pumps
  • Compressors
  • Welders
  • Electric ovens and cooktops
  • Workshop machinery
  • EV chargers
What to Do
  • Turn off other large appliances.
  • Restart the appliance once the system has stabilised.
  • Run high-demand equipment during strong solar production.
  • Check the battery state of charge.
  • Confirm the generator or grid supply is available.
  • Review the inverter or monitoring platform for an overload alarm.
