Seasonal Differences in Solar Production


Solar production changes throughout the year due to daylight hours, sun angle, weather and panel temperature.

Summer

Solar systems generally produce more energy in summer because the days are longer and sunlight is available for more hours.

However, very high panel temperatures can slightly reduce peak output, even on clear days.

Winter

Solar production is usually lower in winter because:

  • Days are shorter
  • The sun sits lower in the sky
  • Cloud cover may be more frequent
  • Shading can extend further across the solar array

Batteries may charge more slowly or may not reach 100% each day during extended poor weather.

Managing Seasonal Changes

During periods of lower solar production:

  • Run large loads during the middle of the day.
  • Reduce unnecessary overnight power use.
  • Monitor battery levels more closely.
  • Keep the generator fuelled and ready on off-grid systems.
  • Avoid running several high-demand appliances together.
