Generator Fuel and Maintenance Requirements

Your backup generator must be kept fuelled, serviced and ready to start when required.

• Keep enough fuel available for extended periods of poor weather.
• Check the fuel level regularly.
• Use the fuel type specified by the generator manufacturer.
• Keep fuel clean and free from water or contamination.
• Check for fuel leaks, unusual smells or damaged hoses.
• Replace old fuel where required, particularly after long periods without use.

For generators with external fuel tanks, confirm the fuel valve is open and the transfer system is operating correctly.

Check the generator regularly for:

• Active alarms or warning lights
• Oil and coolant levels
• Battery condition
• Fuel level
• Leaks
• Blocked air vents
• Pest or vermin damage
• Unusual noise, smoke or vibration

Keep the area around the generator clear, dry and well ventilated.

Generator servicing is normally based on operating hours and time, even if the generator has not run regularly.

Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and keep records of:

• Service dates
• Running hours
• Oil and filter changes
• Repairs
• Battery replacement
• Fuel system maintenance

Failure to maintain the generator may affect reliability and warranty coverage.

Do not remove covers or carry out internal repairs unless you are qualified and authorised to do so.
