Understanding Your MyEnergy System
Your MyEnergy system has been designed to provide reliable power using a combination of solar panels, battery storage, an inverter and, where required, a backup generator or grid connection.
Each system is configured for the property, expected energy use and available power sources. While the equipment may vary between sites, the basic operating principles are generally the same.
Main Parts of Your System
Solar Panels
The solar array generates electricity during daylight hours.
Solar production will vary depending on:
- Time of day
- Weather conditions
- Season
- Shading
- Panel orientation
- Dirt or debris on the panels
Solar power is normally used to supply the property first. Any additional solar may then charge the batteries.
Battery Storage
The battery stores excess solar energy for use when solar production is low or unavailable.
The battery state of charge is normally shown as a percentage.
- 100% means the battery is fully charged.
- 50% means approximately half of the available battery capacity remains.
- A low percentage does not always mean there is a fault.
Your system may automatically limit loads, start a generator or switch to another power source before the battery reaches its minimum operating level.
The battery management system protects the batteries from operating outside their approved limits.
Inverter
The inverter converts battery and solar power into electricity that can be used by the property.
Depending on the system design, the inverter may also:
- Charge the batteries from a generator or the grid
- Start and stop a generator
- Control backup power
- Monitor system performance
- Protect the system during an overload or fault
- Manage multiple power sources automatically
The inverter is the main control point of the system and should not be reconfigured without approval from MyEnergy.
Generator
Some off-grid and remote power systems include an automatic backup generator.
The generator may start when:
- The battery state of charge is low
- The property load is high
- Solar production has been low
- The system requires a scheduled battery charge
- A manual generator start has been requested
The generator may start before the batteries appear empty. This is normal and helps protect the battery system while maintaining reliable power.
Generator fuel, oil levels and servicing remain important, even when the generator is rarely used.
Grid Connection
Grid-connected systems can use power from the electricity network when solar and battery power are unavailable.
Depending on the design, the system may:
- Reduce grid consumption using solar and battery power
- Charge the batteries from the grid
- Export excess solar power
- Provide backup power during a grid outage
Not every circuit is necessarily connected to backup power. Some high-demand loads may remain off during an outage.
Monitoring System
Your system may include remote monitoring through platforms such as Victron VRM, Deye Cloud or another monitoring service.
Monitoring can display:
- Solar production
- Battery state of charge
- Property consumption
- Generator operation
- Grid import and export
- System alarms
- Historical performance
If monitoring goes offline, it does not always mean the power system has stopped operating. The system may continue running normally without an internet connection.
How Power Moves Through the SystemDuring the day, solar power normally follows this order:
- Supply the property.
- Charge the batteries.
- Export or limit excess solar, depending on the system design.
At night or during poor weather:
- The batteries supply the property.
- The generator or grid supplies additional power when required.
- The generator or grid may also recharge the batteries.
This process is normally automatic.
Managing Your Energy UseEven a well-sized system has operating limits.
High-demand appliances can place significant load on the inverter and batteries, particularly when several are operating at the same time.
Common high-demand appliances include:
- Electric ovens
- Induction cooktops
- Electric hot water systems
- Air conditioners
- Pool pumps
- Welders
- Large workshop equipment
- EV chargers
- Bore pumps
Where possible, operate larger loads during daylight hours when solar production is strongest.
Avoid running several high-demand appliances at the same time unless the system has been designed for that load.
Normal System BehaviourThe following conditions can be normal:
- The generator starts before the battery reaches 0%.
- Solar production changes throughout the day.
- Solar production is lower during winter or cloudy weather.
- The batteries do not remain at 100%.
- The system reduces solar production when the batteries are full.
- Monitoring may briefly lose connection.
- Some circuits may not operate during a grid outage.
- The battery percentage may rise while the generator is running.
Submit a support request if:
- The property has lost power.
- The generator will not start.
- The batteries are not charging.
- The system repeatedly shuts down.
- An alarm continues to return.
- Solar production appears consistently lower than expected.
- Monitoring has remained offline.
- There is unusual noise, heat or smell from the equipment.
- Equipment has been damaged by water, fire, pests or impact.
When contacting MyEnergy, provide:
- Site address
- System type
- Current battery percentage
- Fault or alarm code
- Photos of the equipment display
- Screenshots from the monitoring platform
- A description of what happened
- Any recent changes to appliances, internet or generator settings
Do not remove equipment covers or access internal electrical components.
Do not change inverter, battery or generator settings unless instructed by MyEnergy.
Do not continue operating equipment where there is:
- Smoke
- Fire
- Burning smell
- Water ingress
- Exposed wiring
- Significant physical damage
- Unusual heat
Move away from the equipment and contact emergency services where required.
