How Automatic Generator Start Works


An automatic generator start system allows your backup generator to start and stop without manual operation.

The inverter monitors the batteries, property load and available solar. When additional power is required, it sends a start signal to the generator.

When the Generator May Start

The generator may start when:

  • Battery state of charge reaches the programmed low level
  • Property power demand is higher than the inverter or batteries can comfortably supply
  • Solar production has been low for an extended period
  • A scheduled generator run is required
  • The system detects low battery voltage
  • A manual start is requested through the system controls

The exact start settings vary between systems.

What Happens After Starting

Once running, the generator normally:

  • Supplies power to the property
  • Charges the batteries
  • Supports large electrical loads
  • Continues running until the programmed stop conditions are reached

The generator may continue operating after the batteries begin charging. This allows the system to complete its required charge cycle and prevents frequent short start-and-stop periods.

When the Generator Stops

The generator may stop when:

  • The batteries reach the programmed charge level
  • Property demand reduces
  • Solar production becomes sufficient
  • The minimum run time has been completed
  • A scheduled run finishes

The system may also include a short cool-down period before stopping.

What You Should Check

To keep automatic operation available:

  • Keep the generator fuelled.
  • Leave the generator controller in automatic mode.
  • Keep the generator battery charged and in good condition.
  • Arrange servicing at the required intervals.
  • Check for alarms or warning lights.
  • Keep the area around the generator clear and ventilated.
  • Do not switch off the generator isolator unless instructed.
If the Generator Does Not Start

Check:

  • The generator is in automatic mode.
  • There is enough fuel.
  • The emergency stop has not been pressed.
  • The generator battery is not flat.
  • There are no active generator alarms.
  • The fuel supply valve is open, where applicable.

Do not repeatedly attempt to start a generator showing a fault or alarm.
