Kanmantoo, a small town in the Adelaide Hills, carries a rich history. Known for the Kanmantoo mine, which dates back to 1840, it originally attracted settlers from Cornish, German, English and Irish communities seeking copper. Today, the mine operates as a large open-cut site with ongoing exploration for copper and gold deposits underground.
MyEnergy Engineering had the opportunity to install an off-grid power system for a property in this historical town, helping to reduce its reliance on an existing 9kVa diesel generator. The system includes 9.2kW of solar power, paired with 14.4kWh of battery storage using Trina Solar Panels and Pylontech lithium batteries.
One of the features of this installation is the integration with the property's existing diesel generator using the Victron Multiplus-II inverter. Victron's tech allows seamless switching between solar, battery, and generator power, ensuring the system maximises solar use while keeping the generator as an automated backup. The generator start-stop function is controlled by the Victron system, meaning it only kicks in when the battery drops to a certain level or during periods of high demand. This smart control minimises diesel consumption, reducing running costs and wear on the generator, all while maintaining uninterrupted power.
This system delivers the best of both worlds, with solar, battery storage, and generator backup working together to provide reliable power. Smart controls prioritise solar and stored energy, reducing generator run time, lowering fuel costs, and minimising wear. By integrating solar, battery, and generator support, the system maintains consistent off-grid performance while allowing for future expansion, giving the customer confidence in their power supply long term.
